Jack N. Tunge, CFP®, CRPC®
Jack has always had a passion for solving complex problems. When he graduated from CMU with a BSBA in law and economics, he knew his true calling was helping people navigate the complexities of their everyday financial lives. He began his career at an insurance firm where he quickly became aware that there is a major disconnect between earning commissions selling a product and doing what is right for his clients. This realization led him to Midwest Capital Advisors. Jack now has the ability to provide unbiased financial advice and recommendations with no conflicts of interest. “THAT is what’s best for my clients and their future, and I am truly grateful I learned it at such an early age,” says Jack.
Jack specializes in helping individuals and families who have already retired or are within 10 years of doing so. He wisely navigates the complexities of thismilestone transition. Jack crafts retirement plans that provide sustainable income while minimizing taxes and ensuring portfolios are managed to meet goals.Jack is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner and a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA). He also earned the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor™ designation in 2015, and is an activemember of the Financial Planning Association of Michigan.
Outside of work Jack spends his time on the golf course or with his family, which includes his wife Allison. He is also on the Leadership and Advisory Council for Make-A-Wish Michigan where he helps raise money to connect critically ill children with a memory-making wish.
Mark Satkoski, AIF®, CFP®
Prior to joining MCA Mark spent 10+ years serving individuals and retirement plans with a Grand Rapids-area wealth advisory firm and as manager of an office of a national brokerage firm. Mark earned both an MBA and BBA in finance from Grand Valley State University and successfully completed the training and passed the examinations to earn the designations of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and Accredited Investment Fiduciary®. He is an active member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) of Michigan.
Mark realized at an early age his desire to help others and interest in finance complement each other quite well. Navigating the many complexities of personal finance is a challenge for most people, and he enjoys providing solutions to help ease the stresses and anxieties that many experience. “I approach each client relationship the same way: Let me help you plan for the future so you can live in the present.” He specializes in helping individuals transition into retirement and retirement plan sponsors develop and maintain efficient and cost-effective retirement plan offerings.
Mark is originally from the southwest corner of Michigan, residing in Stevensville before moving to the Grand Rapids area. He and his wife, Mackenzie, have a daughter, Maisie, and a son, Samuel, who keep them moving and reinforce their own savings habits. An avid golfer, he was taught the game at a young age by his father; he loves the time outside and the lessons the game offers. Mark also enjoys fishing, traveling and rooting for his favorite college sports teams.
Henry G. Swain
Principal, Director of Operations
Prior to founding Midwest Capital Advisors in 2003, Hank spent 22 years practicing corporate, securities, commercial transactions and real estate law in both law firm and in-house settings. He also brings to MCA over 20 years’ experience as a private investor. Hank’s professional experience, ethics and discipline align well with the objectives of an independent investment fiduciary such as MCA.
Hank received his BBA from the University of Michigan and his JD from the University of Colorado.
In addition to managing the day to day operations of the firm, Hank is responsible for trading and compliance and also oversees the firm’s investment committee.
In the winter you can find Hank working as part of the volunteer National Ski Patrol, and in the warmer months he spends time on Lake Michigan negotiating headwinds on a sailboat or at the family cottage.
Hank and his wife Cynnie have three grown children, a lively canine companion and are avid travelers.
Mike DeSmyter, AIF®
Mike enjoys the client-first focus and entrepreneurial spirit that are part of working for a small, independent investment advisory firm. Mike joined Midwest Capital Advisors in 2009 after spending 10 years at two Michigan-based banks in the private banking and trust investment departments. Mike became one of the owners of MCA in 2014.
Mike works with families and retirement plans to help them implement investment solutions designed around their unique goals and objectives. Listening, educating and informing are all important aspects of Mike’s daily role. He particularly enjoys the many wonderful personal relationships he has formed during his tenure at MCA.
Mike earned his BBA at Central Michigan University and his MBA from Western Michigan University. Mike has successfully completed the training and passed the examination to earn the designation of Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (“AIF”).
Mike shares his time and financial expertise with Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, serving as a board member. He and his wife Erin have two elementary school-aged children, and they all love to travel and watch college basketball.
Client Services Manager
Prior to joining Midwest Capital Advisors in 2020, Steve spent five years working in compliance for a registered investment advisor firm in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He worked with over 180 investment advisor representatives and assisted advisors in nearly every aspect of their practice. Steve graduated from Grand Valley State University with a BBA in business economics. Additionally, he is currently working toward an MBA at Washington State University and expects to graduate in April of 2021.
In 2016, Steve passed the Series 65 examination, which allows him to be an investment advisor representative and requires him to act in a fiduciary capacity, working with the clients’ best interest in mind.
Outside of work, Steve can be found exploring new experiences and traveling the world with his fiance, Kayla. He is a dual citizen of the United States and Austria. Family is important to him, and he can be found at many family gatherings in Michigan and Austria. He also enjoys playing on a local tennis team.
Malinda thrives in a space where she can interact with people. Malinda joined MCA in the summer of 2014 to provide organization, administrative support and a friendly front line to the team of advisors.
Prior to MCA Malinda has been an event planner, writer, editor and small business owner, which qualifies her to keep the wheels of MCA turning. She has spent a lifetime working in all aspects of theatre, from stage manager to teacher to performer. Consequently, she is extremely resourceful and a competent problem solver. Malinda thoroughly enjoys connecting with MCA’s clients in person, over the phone and via email. She likes making clients feel at home at MCA.
Malinda and her husband Brian share four children and the unfettered adoration of their mini-golden doodle, Pete. Outside of the office you will find Malinda in the audience of a local theatrical production, in her garden or walking Pete.
Laura Corbiani, CFP®
Laura joined Midwest Capital Advisors in the summer of 2018 and brings five years of experience in financial and investment services to the team. Laura began her financial career in wealth management while living in Washington State. She has experience in family wealth and retirement planning from both a large brokerage firm and a small credit union. Before focusing her talents on finance, she started her career in ceramic engineering at a major National Research Laboratory.
Laura’s focus at MCA is on advising and assisting with both the retirement plans and wealth management clients. Her favorite part of advising is getting to know clients’ needs and goals, and helping them to find the investment solution that best fits their unique situation.
Laura holds the CERTIFIED FINANICAL PLANNER™ designation, and she is an active member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) of Michigan.
Laura and her family moved to Grand Rapids in 2018 just because they love the area. She and her husband, Dan, have a young daughter, Elsie, and in their discretionary time they enjoy cooking, exploring the outdoors, and the arts. Laura has a passion for the visual arts, and actively creates illustrations in addition to involvement with artistic groups in the Grand Rapids area.
